Abstract
The theory of disruptive innovation has gained a great deal of attention since it was introduced in 1997. The first section of this entry sets the stage by distinguishing between innovation and creativity. The second section discusses the theory of disruptive innovation. The third section offers some examples that represent three different kinds of disruptive innovations; (a) catalytic innovation, (b) business-model innovation, and (c) technological innovation. The fourth section reviews some of the criticisms of the theory of disruptive innovation. The final section summarizes the main ideas and discusses the future application of the theory of disruptive innovation.
